What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat issues related to the uterus. During a hysteroscopy, a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope is carefully inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.

The hysteroscope transmits a live image of the uterus onto a screen, allowing the healthcare provider to visualize and address any abnormalities. Various instruments may be used in conjunction with the hysteroscope for treatment purposes.

Reasons for Hysteroscopy

One of the primary purposes of hysteroscopy is to identify the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. This can include heavier or longer menstrual periods, irregular menstruation, or bleeding between periods. Additionally, hysteroscopy is used to diagnose and address conditions such as benign growths (fibroids or polyps) within the uterus.

Beyond this, hysteroscopy plays a crucial role in other situations such as removing adhesions caused by infection or past surgery, diagnosing the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss, and locating an intrauterine device (IUD).
