P&M Midwives Make a Difference

“Midwife” is translated “with woman” and there have been midwives since the dawn of time.  At Physicians and Midwives, our midwives are Certified Nurse Midwives with undergraduate and advanced degrees in nursing and midwifery, as well as extensive training in Women’s Health and Obstetrics. You may schedule all of your routine GYN care with the midwives, including, but not limited to annual exams with PAP smear, birth control consults and common gynecological problems.

Our Nurse Practitioners are also uniquely qualified to care for both our obstetrical and gynecological patients, having completed advanced training (an RN, a bachelor’s degree, and then a master’s degree) in medical care. They are committed to providing compassionate, individualized care. They have training in contraceptive techniques, diagnosis of common gynecologic problems, prenatal care, and are available in all of our office locations. They can prescribe medications appropriate for patient needs. If necessary, a consultation with our physician providers is always immediately available in our collaborative practice.

For our OB patients, we specialize in low risk, normal birth and are committed to excellence and safety for our patients and their families, although our collaborative model allows us to extend our focus to those women who may require a higher level of supervision during their prenatal care.  A true benefit for our patients is that we practice in a venue where we can offer all of the technology that modern women now expect, with 24 hour physician and midwife coverage at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Our goal is to provide competent, compassionate care that empowers our patients and allows us to assist them in the childbirth experience that they choose, while maintaining and upholding established medical standards and protocols. Assisting families at this special time is our privilege and a true labor of love.  Midwifery is undeniably a very old and rewarding vocation and today we are proud to call it our profession.
